David Forbes has caught my attention with his debut novel The Amber Wizard. He has taken fantasy reading in a new direction. Most of todays fantasies are becoming too complicated in their characters to the point where you need a glossary to understand what you are reading. His characters are simple and well described. When you read the characters name you know who they are without researching back and forth. He has kept the story to wizards, humans and a minimum of creatures. I found the book to be extremely interesting and a pleasure to read. Sometimes less is better. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of David Forbes books.

The Amber Wizard introduces you to Gerin Atreyano, the Crown Prince of Khedesh and his family. Gerin has become the Crown Prince when his father ascends to the throne. As he is learning his new position, a wizard shows up and tests Gerin for magical powers. Gerin turns out to be the Amber Wizard foretold of over a thousand years ago. Gerin now has to learn to be a Crown Prince and a wizard. Gerin has a drive to succeed beyond expectations, which leads to family conflict, jealousy, danger and death.

David Forbes has brought together everything needed to make a fantasy that people can relate to. He has sibling conflicts, a parent wanting to have what their child has accomplished, family love and devotion, and sacrifice. It is not the perfect family, which makes the characters more believable.

The Amber Wizard started out as a fast read in the beginning with a lot of interaction going on. It slowed down a little in the middle and then picked up again ending with a satisfying conclusion. You will not have to wait to find out what happened because the story ended, but you will want to find out what happens next in the life of Gerin Atreyano.

So, if youre struggling and you feel like youre hitting the golf ball shorter than you should and youre fading a little bit, lighten up on your grip.

If you feel that maybe youre hitting it left with a little too much hook, and youre really hitting it far, maybe even a little further that you might normally hit it, then maybe you hold on a little too softly.

For those of you that hook the golf ball and you want to hold onto the grip a little tighter, start with the left hand. Hold onto the club with the left hand just a little tighter than the right, but hold on firmer.

I don't devote a golf lesson or a longer golf instruction session to the rules, but I mention them during my golf lessons. That way the student learns the rules without detracting from his or her golf lesson.

Below we examine five common rules. Adhere to them whenever you play. Also, don't forget about local course rules. All clubs have rules covering specific course areas. If you're playing a course for the first time, check out these rules beforehand. They may save you a stroke or two in a sticky situation. If you're playing a course for the umpteenth time, refresh your memory as to the local rules. They may have changed.

1. Water HazardsGolf's rules define a water hazard as "any sea, lake, pond, river, ditch, surface draining ditch, or other open water course (whether or not containing water), and anything of a similar Beginnergolftips Courses mark water hazards with yellow stakes and lines. But the rules don't stop there, as I mention in my golf tips, they also discuss a lateral water hazard.

The rules define a "later water hazard" as part of a water hazard "so situated that it is not possible, or is deemed by the committee to be impracticable, to drop a ball behind the water hazard according to Rule 26-1b." In other words, it's a water hazard that doesn't lie between the tee and the green. The course marks these off by red stakes or lines.

If you hit into water you have four remedies:

1. Play the ball as near as possible to the spot from which the original ball was played.

2. Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the ball entered the water's edge, directly behind the hole and the spot where the ball is dropped. There's no limit to how far back the ball may be dropped, as long as the point of crossing Vwdlotteryplay between the drop and the hole.

3. Play the ball as it lies in the water hazard.

4. If a ball goes into a lateral water hazard, drop a ball away from the hazard, but within two club lengths of the point from which the ball last crossed the water. However, the ball Wealthyaffiliatebusiness come to rest any closer to the hole than the point at which the first ball crossed the hazard.

2. Hang Time
You're on the 7th green and you hit what your think is a great put. The line is good. The speed is good. And the break is good. It's a done deal, you think. But the ball stops just at the lip of the cup. How long can you wait for the ball to drop into the cup. According to rule 16-2, you can wait the time it takes you to reach the hole plus 10 seconds. By the way, there's no penalty for allowing a ball stay in the cup and letting the next player's ball land on it.

3. White Stakes
You tee off on the 9th hole. You pull the ball left pass some white stakes. White stakes on a course indicate out-of-bounds. You have only one option under Rule 27-the dreaded stroke and distance penalty. Add a stroke and drop a ball as close as possible to where you last played. To keep play moving when you might be OB, play a provisional ball under Rule 27-2. Keep in mind that a wall or other boundary can also mark OB under local rules. That's why you need to check local rules.

4. Lost Ball
On the 15th you hit a drive just to the left of the fairway in deep rough. You look for the ball but can't find it. You declare a lost ball. After hitting, you discover your original ball. If you declared a lost ball and you hit a second ball, the provisions of Rule 27 apply. Once the ball is declared lost and another ball played you can't play the original ball. However, what if the first ball went in the hole?

If the ball goes in the hole, the first ball would be counted, even if you hit a second ball. The first rule of golf states: The Game of Golf consists of playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules. The key words here are "into the hole." Once the first ball when in the hole, the hole was over for the player. Once you've done that, your play of that hole is considered finished. You've completed play of a hole as soon as your ball finds the cup

These four rules come into play fairly frequently. They won't necessarily change your golf handicap or eliminate your need for golf lessons, but they are good to know to enhance your knowledge of the game and avoid getting others mad for not knowing them.

Does card counting work? Yes. In the nine years I worked as a blackjack dealer, I saw a lot of hopeful schemes and ideas, and while many failed, some of them really worked. Card counting, in particular, has a proven track-record of making money for those who are willing to do it right.

Card counting is a little too involved to teach in a short article, but that's okay. Before you learn the specific skills, you need to know what it will involve to really do it right, so you can decide if it is worth the effort. That's what this article is about.

Card Counting 101

In the game of blackjack, card counting is a technique for "beating the house." This means you make more money than you lose in the long run, but not necessarily on any given day. You beat the house by playing in such a way that the odds are in your favor. How do you get the odds in your favor?

You watch and wait. When the deck is "rich" enough in high-value cards (10,J,Q,K,A), the odds tilt slightly in favor of the player. This has been proven statistically, although how much the odds favor you depends on the "house rules," meaning the exact rules of the game in that particular casino. The odds also depend on the number of decks that the dealer deals from, and how far into the "card shoe" (the holder that the cards are dealt from) the dealer deals before re-shuffling.

The basic idea is to monitor the cards as they come out, and when the deck has more high-value cards than normal in it, bet more. Bet less when the house has the edge, more when you have the edge, and the odds are in your favor. In other words, you should make money in the long run.

The above is a simple explanation, and you need to study a good counting book to make this work. You need to know "basic strategy," meaning you need to know when to take a "hit" and when to "stand." Your play has to be precise to really have the edge. You also need to practice at home for hours. It can be tough at first to keep track of all those cards flying out of that shoe, while the other players talk and waitresses interrupt you.

The "counting" part is essentially assigning a value to the cards and tracking them. This is done more easily at tables where the cards are dealt face up (except the dealer's "hole card"). In one system. Aces and face cards are given a value of -1, two through six are valued at +1, and seven, eight and nine are considered neutral.

Watching the cards, you add and subtract their values, betting the table minimum all the while. When you arrive at a predetermined count, let's say +7, you raise your bet. The high count means that there are a higher percentage of high-value cards left in the deck than normal. The odds are in your favor.

One card counter I dealt to for years would sit at the table for most of an evening, almost always betting the $2 minimum. He shifted chips from one hand to another, his own way of tracking the "plus or minus count." When the shoe (five decks of cards in this case) was rich enough in high-value cards, he would suddenly be betting two hands at $20 each.

He made money, but not much. Do this well, and you may still only get a 1.5% edge on the casino. If, between your minimum bets and the others you average $8 per hand, and 75 hands per hour are dealt, you'll make about $9 per hour. This assumes you can tolerate alternating losing and winning days and hours of concentration. Betting more brings that hourly rate up, of course, along with the risk of bigger losing days. Card counting is definitely not for everyone.

But whatever the case - no matter how much money you do or don't have - you can find a golf vacation that's just right for you. If you do happen to have a lot to spend to get away, you would be wise to go where the warm weather beckons golfers from all across the world. How about the southern United States? California? The Virgin Islands? Hawaii? Why, you could see a volcano or three while you tee up on the green.

But if you don't have the funds available for extravagant vacations such as these, (remember, not only do you have to pay golf fees, but you must also cover hotel stay, transportation, food, and other activities) you could take a much cheaper vacation. If you live on the East Coast of the United States, you could drive yourself and a few friends to a golf club a few hours south to play for a few days. Granted, it may not be a resort-like atmosphere, but if you are there strictly for the golf, that shouldn't even matter!

Are you bringing non-golfers on your trip?

Around a decade ago while living in a rural city I decided to take up a martial art. Well it was really retake up a martial art as I had practiced Tae Kwon Do in my teens. This was now 20 years later. Fortunately I had been doing yoga classes for 8 years so the body was still relatively flexible and strong. But the more I did yoga, the more I longed to return to a martial art so it was time to move on.

Many would argue yoga and martial arts are a great combination and I think so too but life offers far too little time so I had to choose one over the other. It was time to learn to defend myself once again.

I researched for a couple of months the different styles and clubs on offer and there was plenty to choose from. I finally narrowed it down to two. The choice was not just the two clubs were the best in the area, but the best on offer to fit in with my time constraints, my working hours, distance to travel, and a style that now suited me.

The two I chose were a jujutsu club and a mixed style club. The jujutsu club offered two styles a very conservative aikido style and a modernised jujutsu style. The club sensei recommended the modern style and I decided to try his recommendation. It was a system of close contact fighting, taking your opponent down and keeping them there. Similar to aikido there was no free sparring as the techniques were too dangerous. As a spectator it seemed slow and easy but on the mat it was physically demanding. The style was taught slow and carefully. Rolls and falls would be taught over several months.

The other mixed club was run by a sensei with a background in Tae Kwon Do. The style incorporated boxing, kickboxing, grappling, in fact bits of everything. The club was out of the town a bit but one of my closest friends was doing it and it sounded very good. It looked impressive on entry with men and women training around the dojo doing hard kicks from boxing positions interspersed with sit-ups and pushups, then some bag punches to finish.

My friend introduced me to the sensei who explained the style, then said I am going to teach you a forward roll. He leapt forward did a roll and came up into a fighting stance. Now your turn, just roll. I tried to emulate his roll struck my shoulder and ended in strong pain. I am going to leave you with Suzy, shes eleven and broke her clavicle the first time she tried it. Shes got it fine now though. It was quite obvious that although he new how to roll, he had no idea how to teach it and Suzy, myself and I suspect many others had paid for his inabilities.

I then spoke to others students sitting around but not training. We had a grading several weeks ago and the injuries still havent healed enough to retrain the gradings are very tough. I wondered what good a defense system was that left you incapacitated for weeks after using it.

Sensei was now giving a lecture if your opponent can do a 5 mile run, you must be able to do a 10 mile run. If they can do 50 push-ups you must do 100, it went on and on. I thought I must remember if I am attacked in the street to ask how far they can run before I defend myself. He finished by sitting cross legged in front of me on the mat in a sensei grasshopper fashion explaining how good he was and how much it would benefit me to learn off him. I politely declined.

He was not a martial artist but someone living out a fantasy. Fantasy is fine but not when you teach things you dont fully understand and damage your students in the process. Eventually my friend decided the club was no good and left (took up yoga incidentally).

Choose your club carefully as a complete idiot can get a black belt (theres even online and video classes), but very few can become a SENSEI a true teacher.

What Is The Structure Of A Golf Course?

Every now and then we all like to know a little more or have infoprmation on hand about the things we do most or indeed, would like to do most. This article trys to explain the make up or anatomy of a golf course and I think it does so quite well. It's brief but to the point. If your child or a friend who is taking interest in taking up golf should want an expalnation, this article about the structure of a golf course comes in handy.

Often having been considered an elite sporting activity in the past, golf is now an increasingly popular sport across all segments of society. Golf is a ball game that does not use a fixed playing area. Instead, it is played on a tract of land known as the golf course. There are over 25, 000 golf courses all around the world.

The holes. The purpose in the game is playing a ball into the hole, therefore the holes are the most essential elements of the golf course. They are also referred to as cups. Hole also refers to the total distance from the tee to the green. The regular number of holes on a golf course is nine or eighteen. The cups are always found on the green and they have a diameter of 4.25 in. and a depth of 3.94 in. their position may be changed from day to day. The cup has a flag in it so that it can be seen from the distance.

The green. The grass of the putting green, also called just the green has to ensure the easy-rolling of the ball over long distances. This is why it must be constantly cut very short. The grain is the direction of growth of the blades of grass, which can affect the roll of a golf ball. The brake(the slope of the green) also influences the roll of the ball. The quality differs from one putting green to another. A green is considered to be fast if even a light stroke of the ball makes it roll a long distance. On the contrary, a green is described as slow if the ball needs a strong stroke in order to roll a specific distance on the golf course.

The tee. This is a pre-determined area from where a ball is first hit. Officially, it is called teeing ground because here the player can use a tee(a small peg made out of plastic or wood). Putting the ball on with a tee makes the shot much easier. On most of the golf courses, there are tee boxes having names associated with degrees of competence or with sex and age. There are professional and amateur tees, and also Mens, Ladies or senior tees.

Fairway and rough. The fairway is the part of the golf course where the grass is cut short between the tees and the putting greens. After teeing off , the ball might stop on the fairway or on the rough. The player has to hit the ball towards the green from the position it came to rest. After the ball gets on the green, it is putted towards the hole until it gets into the cup. Playing the ball from the fairway is much easier than from the rough., because the grass on the rough is much longer than on the fairway.

Hazards. There are two types of hazards on a golf course: water hazards( rivers, lakes) and bunkers. There are special rules that apply in playing when the balls come to rest in a hazard. For instance, the player is not allowed to touch the ground with his club before playing a ball. If the ball cannot be played from the hazard, the player can remove it by hand and put it outside the hazard within two club lengths from its position in the hazard, but this brings on a penalty of one stroke. If the ball can not be found in the hazard it has to be replaced by dropping another one outside the hazard. There are strict rules that govern where exactly the ball may be dropped.

Borders and obstructions. Beyond the borders of the golf course we have the out of bounds . If the ball gets out of bounds, it must not be played. If the ball rests on an area referred to as ground under repair, it may be lifted and played from the border of that area. Obstructions are different man-made objects to be found on the course, and there are applied specific rules when the play is impeded by them.

The practice range. This is an additional facility and it is not part of the golf course itself.

Par. Each hole on the golf course is assigned a par, which is the number of strokes needed to complete the hole by a skilled golfer.

These are the most important factors regarding a golf course. It might seem boring when explained in theory, but golf is an exciting sport and its worthwhile testing your ability when youre on a real golf course.

Each year, twelve teams compete in the World Team Tennis (WTT) Pro League and are comprised of some of the sports top athletes. The season runs for three weeks during summer and attracts over 150,000 fans annually.

In another article, 'Researching Your Niche - How Hard Can It Be?', I showed you how to find niche e-book ideas in article directories. Today we're going to use the content in them to create e- books.

Web site owners use Article Directories to submit their articles they have written so they get free publicity for their web sites. At the end of each article is a link back to their web site with a bit of information about their site. These site owners want people to take that article and market it to others so they get visitors to their site with out spending any money on marketing themselves. This is perfect for savvy entrepreneurs who are willing to spend a few hours of their time in order to profit for many years.

Go to www.goarticles.com or any other article directory, and type in the topic of the niche you want to write about in the search bar at the top right (make sure it's on "article content" rather than search by author). So for example type in " gardening". You'll get thousands of result related to what you have searched for. Now what I want you to do is simply go through the results finding at least one hundred quality articles related to the topic of gardening and copy and paste them into Word or some kind of word processing application.

As I've said make sure they are quality articles. If you create an e-book using rubbish you'll just get a sky high refund rate and it will all be a pointless exercise. Do it right from the off and you'll set yourself up for success.

Try and tie all the articles together into one sub niche. For example a sub niche of gardening might be composting. So you could find articles on composting left over food, what plants not to compost that kind of thing. Use a bit of imagination when using this method.

Email Article Authors

You don't want to use any articles without the author's permission. Remember the majority of articles will have been submitted so the author can get visitors to their site without spending a dime. However you never want to breach any copyright laws. To avoid this email the authors of each article. Explain to them that you are creating an e-book aimed at their niche market. You'd love to include their article in your book and you'll include a link back to their site and information about them. Also ask them if they have any other articles you could include.

You can expect around seventy percent of authors you contact to be delighted you're going to include their article in your book. Then all you need to do is discard the articles from authors who you haven't heard from or who won't let you use their article.

Put the articles in an order that makes sense and create a contents page. Use the titles of the articles as contents topics. You could even create chapters aimed at solving certain problems people in your niche have. So for example if you were creating an e-book on golf you could create a section on improving your golf swing, a section on the mind game of golf and so on. All articles would make up separate chapters.

Finally write a short introduction and conclusion. These only need to be a few paragraphs each. Tell people what they can expect to learn and make sure you sign off using your name. Instantly you will establish yourself as an expert. You can also link to your back end products at the end of the book to increase your sales.

If you are tired of having to spend yet another weekend home, perhaps it is time to explore the vicinity of your city and invest some time to learn the specifics of the surrounding areas. Instead of visiting the grocery store that is near your home, take a detour and go a bit further to visit another shopping mall and take a look to the things your local food chain does not carry. Getting to a different place to do the "same old stuff" can give your day the essence of change and yourself an opportunity to check the things you have been missing for some time.

Finally, you can always stay in your house, but still do something recreational. Your indoor hobbies can be a very interesting way for you to spend some quality time with yourself and you can also unplug your phone and take a long and relaxing hot bath. The possibilities are endless, as long as you think what you have been missing and putting it as your first priority in your weekend agenda.

First of all I want to tell you how fit I am today, then I will tell you how I used to be. I know you are saying to yourself, why I should be Interested how this guy feels.

Well my friends there is a darn good reason for this.

My name is Ralph Morton, I am 78 years old and I feel like I am 55. I play golf on a regular basis and shoot in the high 80s. I walk, dont take a cart; I guess the reason is I hit the ball right down the middle, unlike my playing partners, well a couple of them, who will chase their ball from one side of the fairway to the other. They of course cover a lot of ground. Many times they say, I have had the same ball for a couple of years as I never lose it.They are wrong of course; I have been known to have lost a few.

My point is I am a very different person than I was a few years ago.

Going back about two and a half years ago, Like many other elderly people I had resigned myself to getting old, hey, I was 76, my wife and I both didnt realize it, but we had accepted old age. We didnt play golf any longer, I was fat, and had no drive at all. Our whole life had changed in just a few months.

We just did the things old people do without thinking, we had just gradually completely changed our lives.

When I think of it, I guess this is what happens to most married couples, I may be wrong but.... I was overweight, a lot overweight, and I didnt feel that I could do anything, you know what I mean, listless, and happy to just sit down and watch television every night, and get fatter.

It is so easy to get into a routine, and time flies by so fast, and we do nothing to help to make our lives any better.

We just accept things as they are.

Then, after months of missing my golf, and doing nothing, I made an amazing discovery. I stumbled over an article and the following pictures that changed my life. I guess I should have been smarter for the world is much more different from what it was years ago.

With the exception of talent, when it comes to NBA betting, the most important factor to consider is the home court, right?

Well, not exactly.

Actually, there's not much difference in courts. They're all made of wood and while the court logos are of varying colors, designs and questionable tastes, all have a 10-foot basket at each end. Supposedly, there's some advantage to "knowing the rims" but since metal mostly comes into play on missed shots and no one deliberately tries to miss, it's difficult to see where the advantage lies. Yes, we know from a rudimentary 10th grade course in physics that longer shots produce longer rebounds but the direction of the carom is based more on the trajectory of the shot than anything to do with the condition of the rims.

Another supposed advantage of the home court is the local fans. But it's hard to accept the notion that professionals, who balk at signing autographs unless they're paid, are motivated by the very same people they so willingly shun. Besides, what did all that ranting and raving by Spike Lee at Madison Square Garden ever do for New York? Reggie Miller still did the right thing by the Pacers and destroyed the Knicks.

The final alleged advantage of playing at home is that players gain some sort of "comfort level" from sleeping in their own beds. Excuse me, but weren't you paying attention to the Gold Club trial in Atlanta a few years ago? Based on the evidence, it seems that many a player readily would relinquish a night under his own satin sheets if an, ahem, "dancer" were made available for some companionship.

That being said, there is an advantage to playing at home but it has little to do with the court, the fans or the sleeping conditions. It has everything to do with getting to the court.

Clear and simple, visiting teams are disadvantaged most by travel, a factor we touched on but did not fully explore in a previous article. In fact, how far a team has to travel, how many time zones it crosses, the direction it travels and how many games it's forced to play in a given number of nights are crucial elements in both NBA oddsmaking and NBA betting.

Remember how tired and out of synch you were after a cross Atlantic flight? Now try running six miles (the average distance a basketball player runs in a game) in a different venue, three out of four or four out of six nights and see how it impacts your athletic performance. NBA betting pros understand that no team can be up for every game, that fatigue can become a significant factor, and pointspreads often grow in proportion to the length of a road trip.

It's also worth noting that it's more difficult on the body to travel against the sun, or west to east, than it is to go east to west. So, NBA teams based in the Western and Rocky Mountain Time Zones often are disadvantaged more by long road trips than are teams in the Eastern and Central Time Zones. One way they overcome this handicap is by flying all the way east to start the road trip then work their way back west.

Oddsmakers and NBA betting experts not only consider the journey of the road team but also note whether the home team has been stationed in familiar confines for a period of time or is itself just returning from a lengthy trip.

Often overlooked by the casual player, savvy bettors understand that it's always important to check the schedule.

Interestingly, despite playing 82 home games to gain one extra postseason home date in a series, the home court means less in the playoffs than it does during the regular season. Generally, that's because teams in a post-season series have similar travel itineraries. For example, if San Antonio and Sacramento are set to square off in a best-of-seven series beginning in Texas, once the Kings visit the Spurs for the initial two games in the series, the teams will have similar travel schedules, flying to Northern California within hours of each other. That also will be the case if a return flight to San Antonio is needed to finish the series. The sameness of travel mitigates the home court advantage.

I'm often asked about how to get "control" of emotions when on the course. Along with this is the desire by many golfers to want "control" of their swing and where the ball will end up. These misguided desires are probably the biggest destroyers of confidence and a fluid swing. Instead of wanting "control," the golfer would be better served to think of wanting such positive mental attitudes as: "release" and "carefree" and "loose."

Just the word "control" itself tightens up your muscles when you think or say it.

I've heard golfers say that they have trouble with their emotions on the course and yet, at the office, they are able to remain cool, calm and collected in order to do their job well.

Let's look at a typical business negotiation and compare it to being on the course with regard to the meaning of "control."

Many high-performing business types are absolute masters of making a deal happen because they feel in control, and yet, they go out on the course and end up throwing clubs soon after. It doesn't have to be like that.

Feeling like you have "control" or not is completely all in your mind.

For instance,

In a business negotiation, any number of things could happen that are completely out of your control such as: 1. The client could get an emergency phone call at any moment taking him out of your meeting, 2. He could have a heart attack or stroke right there in the meeting 3. He could be in a bad mood from some unsettling business or personal news before the meeting that makes it all but impossible for him to focus on your pitch/idea. 4. He could have some sort of prejudice against you (race, age, etc.) before you even begin negotiations 5.He has some sort of psychological problem that overrides logic and reasoning at times. These issues and more easily could be in play and you have absolutely no control of these kinds of things.

Any one of these for the other person can derail any successful business outcome before you even have a chance. Even with all of that, most businesspeople would agree with you that they feel they still have a great deal of control, which is why they can be successful. And that is a good thing!

Now, let's compare to golf, where, you control everything!

You swing the clubs, you are in control of your own mind, you choose everything about how you decide to play the game. The only thing you don't ultimately control in playing golf is the weather and course conditions but even there, you can observe them and make adjustments for them.

So, objectively, you really have MORE control in golf than you do in a business negotiation setting because golf is usually played as an individual sport. You depend on nobody but yourself.

In the final analysis, I know what you mean when you say it feels like the golfer is not in control of his shots because I've been there. However, it's all in how you look at it, your internal representation (an NLP term) of the situation. If you look at your golf game with the idea that you feel you have no control over the situation, then you don't. And it will be even more difficult to succeed just as it would be if a businessperson had that same thought going into negotiations.

Starting to get the picture now?

Even successful business people don't succeed in closing every sale or in getting everything they want out of a deal. But, they sure go in thinking that THEY CAN! That's the same way of thinking we have to have with regard to control in our golf game.

Yes we stumble and fail (plenty!) , but, if we BELIEVE we have as much control over golf as we do in business, then we will succeed at golf even more than we have in businesss! Everything is relative and it all starts with how we represent a situation in our brain that is most influencing in an outcome. And if we know in advance that getting angry and frustrated will hinder our achieving our golf goal (just like it would in a business deal), then we can use that same skill we put to use in business to help us achieve that outcome. It's really no different except in how we think about it.

Perfectionism is not a bad thing either in my opinion. The desire to want to be perfect, to perform flawlessly is a driving force toward achievement and is useful. However, it's the EXPECTATIONS that get us into trouble. Strive for perfection, but be glad for everything is the secret to emotional control and success on the course.

The general consensus seems to be that, at the rate he is going, Tiger Woods is destined to be the greatest golfer of all time before his career is over. That may be true. But he has a ways to go before he can catch the current holder of that title, "The Golden Bear" Jack Nicklaus.

Nicklaus has been a dominant force in golf for four decades, first on the PGA Tour from the 1960s to the mid-to-late 1980s, then on the Champions Tour from the late 1980s to the 1990s. His name is forever linked to that of another great golfer, Arnold Palmer, because together, they ushered in the renaissance of golf. The Palmer-Nicklaus rivalry was so compelling that it made golf a popular TV sport for the first time and spurred interest in the game all across America.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Nicklaus took up golf at the age of ten and shot a remarkable 51 for his first nine holes. He was breaking 70 by the time he was 13 and he had already won his first championship by then. At the age of 12, Nicklaus won the first of six Ohio State Junior titles. As a student at Ohio State University, Nicklaus won the U.S. Amateur title twice (1959, 1961), an NCAA Championship (1961) and nearly won the US Open (1960), finishing second by two strokes to Palmer, who won the tournament with a final round 65.

In 1962, Nicklaus turned pro and compiled an astounding record of 18 wins in major tournaments (three Open Championships, four U.S. Opens, five PGA Championships, and six Masters) that is still unmatched. He is one of only five golfers to win all four golf majors (the "Career Grand Slam"). He was the first player to have won all four majors more than once, with Tiger Woods as the only other player to achieve that feat. Nicklaus is still the only golfer to have won all four majors at least three times. Even in the twilight to his career, at age 46, Nicklaus won The Masters in 1986 to become the oldest player to ever win the tournament. Overall, in major golf tournaments, Nicklaus has finished in the "top three" 48 times (including 19 second-place finishes and nine third-places), finished in the "top five" 56 times, and finished in the "top 10" 73 times.

Tiger may one day be the greatest of them all, but for now, only Nicklaus has passed the toughest test of all -the test of time.

In 1986, while working at KCBS-TV, Channel 2 in Los Angeles, California, my newsroom buddies and I made up a "fantasy" basketball game, drafting a bunch of NBA players, using their real life stats and vying for the title of best basketball owner in our workplace. However, because baseball was my favorite sport, I remember saying to the guys in my league, "It's too bad we couldn't figure out how to do this with baseball!" Well, wouldn't you know it, the power of suggestion kicked in, and the very next weekend after saying that, I was browsing through a bookstore in the mall and found a book entitled "Rotisserie Baseball". I took it off the shelf immediately, and read the whole thing while still in the bookstore. I was hooked. I purchased the book, took it home, and the following Monday at work announced to my guys, "Hey, I know how to do this now for baseball."

For the past two decades, I've been having the time of my life as commissioner of many different types of fantasy baseball leagues. Are you a fantasy baseball player? If not, would you like to be? If you are, are you completely satisfied with the way your final results and league champions are determined? Using the classic eight categories of Batting Avg., Home Runs, RBIs, Stolen Bases (for hitters), and Wins, ERA, WHIP and Saves (for pitchers) was always a blast. But hey, for a baseball afficionado like myself, I was always searching for ways to enhance the pleasure of playing this incredibly enjoyable recreational sport. More categories, such as On Base Avg., Slugging Percentage, OPS (a combination of the preceding two), Winning Percentage, picking a major league manager and using his real life record, picking a major league team, and somehow incorporating its home attendance into your salary cap, are all options available in playing fantasy baseball.

Does it ever bother you though, knowing that one bad outing by one of your starting pitchers can destroy your ERA or WHIP for the entire season? In major league baseball, a pitcher may have a couple of bad outings, but that won't necessarily prevent his team from winning it all at the end of the year. Is it the best way to build a team by stockpiling hitters who slug tons of home runs and collect loads of RBIs, or to load up on closers? Those are very common strategies to winning in many forms of fantasy baseball.

Have you ever built a fantasy team where every hitter in your starting lineup, from the leadoff guy, to the cleanup hitter, to the 8th guy in the order, each has equal importance? Do you think MLB GM's consider these types of things to be vital? Have you ever built a fantasy team where your middle relievers are every bit as crucial to your success as your starting rotation and your closer? Just watch a major league game today, and you can see just how critical it is to have those middle relievers who can either keep a lead for you, or keep you close enough to get into a position to win, while setting things up for your closer to come in and hopefully slam the door on the opposition. How about your defense? Does the ability of your fielders to catch and throw the ball matter to your team's success?

How do you mix all of these elements into a fantasy baseball game? Imagine not only being able to do so, but also doing it 162 times every season, and again in the post-season if you're good enough to make it to the playoffs. There are plenty of computer simulations out there which will allow you to do this, and they, too, are great fun. That is, if you don't mind your team's or players' success relying upon the computer's "roll-of-the dice", or "spin-of-the-wheel" in generating the outcome of your game.

For the ultimate experience, I suggest you consider finding a way to play your fantasy games where the stats your players generated in real life the day or night before, have a direct and immediate impact on what your team does the very next day. Where every phase of the game is critical, hitting for average, getting on base, hitting for power, driving in runs, base running, fielding, fielding range, throwing out base runners. All of these elements are accurately measurable through a science known as sabermetrics, using linear weighted values, made popular by baseball statistics researchers like John Thorn, Pete Palmer and Bill James, just to name a few. When you assign linear weighted values to offensive events in baseball, you can predict the total amount of runs any major league team will score in a given season within about a five percent margin of error.

Wow! Well, isn't baseball all about scoring more runs than the other team? If you could predict, scientifically, how many runs a team should score, or prevent from being scored by a team's pitching staff and its defense, would that be a most viable and dynamic way to play fantasy baseball? Where every offensive event, and a pitcher's pitching index (total innings pitched...times the league ERA divided by nine...minus the pitcher's earned runs) are absolutely critical to the outcome of your game. With the plethora of existing games for different target groups like kids, teenagers, adults or seniors, anthropologists have proposed their classification under three major clusters. One can decide to play a game of skill, which can be mental or physical. Some are actually video game versions of jigsaw puzzles.

One popular genre is the strategy game genre. In this genre, you must youre your mind against the computer or other opponents to win the game. One example of this game is the Civilization game series. In Civilization, you pretend to be a civilization like the Egyptians, Russians, Germans or any past civilization. The Appeal of Mini Baccarat

Like classic Baccarat, the version known as 'Mini Baccarat' version it is very simple to learn and play. In fact it's one of the easiest games in the casino. No special skills or knowledge are needed. Mini Baccarat plays by the same rules as classic Baccarat , with only minor procedural differences. The same fixed game rules apply in all casinos. Rigid conventions dictate whether to hit or stand, and everyone follows the same formula.

And whats more, baccarat has the best odds overall of any casino game, with the lowest house edge. As with poker, the casinos make their money not by winning against the player, but by charging winners a commission.

So what is different about Mini Baccarat? Well, there are a number of factors:

In terms of how the game itself is played, the main difference is in the role of the banker. In the classic game the players take turns at being banker and the shoe is passed between them. But in Mini-Baccarat the dealer is always the Banker and the Players never touch the cards.

Mini baccarat is usually dealt from a six-deck shoe, whilst classic baccarat plays with 8 decks.

Having less decks changes the odds very slightly in favor of the house on tie bets. For a 6-deck game the house edge is 1.06% on the banker bet, 1.24% on the player bet, and 14.44% on the tie. Whereas in the eight deck version the house edge is 1.06% on the banker bet, 1.24% on the player bet, and 14.36% on the tie.

The actual dealing process is faster. In mini-baccarat, dealers handle all the cards and place them right-side-up on the table. In standard baccarat, bettors draw cards from the shoe then place them upside down on the table before making a ritual out of turning them over.

In mini baccarat a single dealer handles the entire game, including dealing the cards, whereas the big table version will have several dealers.

While regular baccarat is known for its huge bets, betting minimums and maximums are usually lower in the Mini game. The minimum can be as low as $2 - $5, and the maximum up to around $500.

There are less players and a smaller table. Instead of the big table and large number of players of classic baccarat, the Mini Baccarat table is similar to a blackjack table, with just seven or sometimes nine places for players.

The Mini version is played in a less formal, more relaxed atmosphere. The classic game can have quite an intimidating atmosphere, with high stakes, well dressed high-rollers, several dealers in tuxedos, and the plush baccarat area thats separated off from the other games. Mini baccarat is part of the normal casino floor, does not have the high rollers atmosphere and dress codes, and its lower betting limits that make it accessible to all.

All in all, its speed, more relaxed atmosphere and lower stakes make Mini Baccarat a good way to learn the game, and many players will never move on to the big table version.

E! True ZX Games Story: Boulder Dash

Boulder Dash, released in 1984, is in no way balderdash. Please do not take the "we do not like pun" high horse here as in terms of this article it has to do with the history of invention.

Here is couple of quick facts about the Boulder Dash story:

* Peter Liepa, who is credited as the game creator, studied Physics just like Douglas Smith (http://www.zxgames.com/en/loderunnerstory.shtml).
* Unlike Lode Runner's creator, Peter did not become quick- and super-rich.

So, here is the story

* Game Inventors: Peter Liepa, Chris Gray
* Occupation at the time of invention: Peter Liepa - unemployed; Chris Gray - unknown
* Location at the time of invention: Canada.

The game concept and its realization seem to be simple (at least in terms of modern technologies). However Boulder Dash's cookbook is composed of one man's versatile interests and another man's idea.

Fascination with animation

Born in 1953 in Ottawa, as a kid Peter aspired to be an animator or special effects designer on the one side, and a particle physicist on the other. He had to drop the latter as he found it too practical and fuzzy and thought there was vague future for particle Physics. The incentive for animation, on the other hand, lived with Peter until there was the right time to let it out.

Fascination with computers

When in high school, Peter was sent to the National Research Council of Canada for a week as part of an internship program. He had to work in a physics lab, Peter's supervisor had a shiny new Wang Calculator and it arrested the young intern's attention. In the same week all interns were taken on a tour of the Council's computer center. Amazed by what he saw, Peter asked to spend the rest of his internship time there. At the computer center there was an interactive terminal, which in those days was something similar to Teletype or IBM Selectric hooked up to a central mainframe. Peter quickly learned to program it, but after the end of week's internship there was no opportunity to study computers for a long time. In those days, the concept of personal computers was unimaginable.

Peter started off in Physics in university, but soon switched to math. His summer jobs were in computer programming, and he spent a lot of time playing early things like Conway's Game of Life, which printed results on paper and had not digital screen whatsoever.

Fascination with human nature

After graduating in math, Peter drifted around studying subjects like human memory and perception. He received a master's degree in Control Theory. Both Control Theory and knowledge of human nature are another key points in what was later to become the cult game.

Another man's idea

When Peter was in his late twenties, he visited a friend of his, who was deeply into electronic toys and had a large screen TV and an Atari 400. Peter spent several evenings playing games, and then had a "I can do this" flash. He went out and bought an Atari 800 to start writing games. But rather than just starting to write a game, Peter thought it would be prudent to contact a local game publisher to see what sort of game might be in demand.

The publisher put Peter in touch with Chris Gray, who had submitted a game in Basic, but did not have the skills to convert it into machine language. The game was similar to an arcade game called The Pit, but after examining it more, Peter found that the game had very few game play variations - too much of it was predetermined.

The development

Not satisfied with Chris' game algorithm, Peter started playing with basic elements of dirt, rocks and jewels and within a couple of days had built the basic "physics engine" of what was to become Boulder Dash. He realized that using a random number generator one could generate random caves, and that by controlling the density of rocks and jewels one could get some interesting game play. The game play fascinated not only from a puzzle standpoint, but it also appealed to various emotional drives - the obvious psychotic ones like greed (collecting jewels), destructiveness (dislodging rocks and killing fireflies) and the neurotic ones like cleaning all the dirt out of a cave.

Chris and Peter lived quite far apart, so that their meetings were infrequent and involved a long drive. It turned out quite quickly that their design goals and methods were fairly incompatible. Peter was developing a game quite different from Chris' original, and did so just about completely on his own. Peter designed all of the elements, physics, caves, the game play, the graphics, the music, and the title. Chris helped out with a few odds and ends - he suggested, for example, how to make the graphics for the game title by composing big letters out of the Atari character graphics. In the end, there was a lot of debate as to how exactly Chris should be credited and what his share of royalties should be.

The working title of the game for a long time was Cavern Raider, and several other variants like Cavern Crystals. Eventually Peter came up with the name Boulder Dash, which is a takeoff on the word balderdash. Coincidentally, a board game named Balderdash was also published in 1986.

The game's main character - Rockford.

Originally, in the early physics engine stage, Rockford was just a static shape similar to a cross. When one moved the shape, it dug through the earth and absorbed jewels. In fact, the graphics were very simple, and elements were all single characters in a 24x40 character display. There was no scrolling in the early versions of the game. It was Chris who suggested that the digging shape should be a "man", and together they came up with a simple human shape. When Peter showed an early version of the game to a potential publisher, they pointed out the "the man" was way too small and needed to be a more recognizable character. But it was not possible to make "the man" more prominent without making everything larger as well. So this was where the hard work began of converting the game from one that ran on a 24x40 character display to one that scrolled over a much larger region.

Now that the game elements were bigger, Peter was able to add much more detail, including making "the man" more recognizable. He built a character editor to work out the pixels and the animation. It was at this point that the Rockford character took shape. Rockford was not supposed to be any particular kind of human or animal, he just evolved in the pixel editor. Since Peter used to be interested in animation, he worked out the character to make Rockford blink his eyes and tap his feet. This was an innovation that added a lot of depth to the character.

The result

Overall, it took Peter about 6 months to finish the first version of Boulder Dash with no more than 2 hours of actual work per day.

Even though Boulder Dash was finished in half a year, it took another six months to find a publisher and work out a publication agreement. By this time Peter was already full time employed at a company that developed word processing software.

And so, the rest is history - Boulder Dash was eventually published by First Star in 1984 and was an instant bestseller.

The online skill games market is raking in an astounding $412.00 (USD) per second, sending analysts into a frenzy.

Affiliate Program History

Invented by CDNow.com at the end of 1994 and pioneered by Amazon.com in 1996, "affiliate programs", also known as Associate Programs or Partner Programs, are a simple way for Web sites to generate revenue by directing traffic toward other sites and a great way for the operating site to increase its traffic and revenue.

Because affiliate programs are so convenient and work so well, they have become the industry's dominant method of online Marketing.

There are 4 different kinds of affiliate programs to compensate "Affiliates" (or referring sites) for generating traffic to the Affiliate Program operating Website: Pay-Per-Impression, Pay-Per-Click, Pay-Per-Lead and Pay-Per-Sale.

Pay-Per-Impression (CPM)

Cost-Per-Mil (Mil = 1000) Impressions. Publisher gets from Advertiser $x.xx Amount of money for every 1000 Impressions (Page Views/Displays) of the Ad. The Ad can be Text (AdSense), Banner Image or Rich Media.

The Pay-Per-Impression and Pay-Per-Click Model are not common to be used in Affiliate Marketing anymore. They were used in the Past, but were mostly abandoned due to Fraud and lack of Results.

The CPM (cost-per-impression) compensation Model was revived by Google for Google AdWords in summer 2005. The feature is called "Site-Targeting" in AdWords and allows you to display your Adsense Ad on a specific Website that runs AdSense Ads.

Pay-Per-Click (CPC) Model

Cost-Per-Click. Advertiser pays Publisher $x.xx amount of money, every time a visitor (potential prospect) clicks on the advertiser's Ad. It is irrelevant (for the compensation) how often an Ad is displayed. Commission is only due when the Ad is clicked.

Like the Pay-per-Impression model was the Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Model popular during the dot com boom at the end of the 1990th but was mostly abbandoned by Advertisers for Advertisements on other Websites due to rampart problems with click fraud.

The PPC Model was kept alive by the PPC Search Engine GoTo.com which became later Overture.com and is now owned by Yahoo! and renamed from "Yahoo Sponsored Search" to Yahoo Search Marketing.

Google launched their PPC Service AdWords in 2000. Ask Jeeves, now simply Ask.com followed with their PPC Service in 2005 called Ask Sponsored Listings and MSN.com in 2006 with AdCenter. Other PPC Services are Miva/FindWhat.com and 7Search.com.

Contextual Advertising

The big come-back of PPC came when Google launched AdSense in 2003, the birth of contextual Advertising. What is Google AdSense? Here is a quote from Google's History at Google's corporate Website.

Google AdSense: "... offering web sites of all sizes a way to easily generate revenue through placement of highly targeted ads adjacent to their content. Google AdSense technology analyzes the text on any given page and delivers ads that are appropriate and relevant, increasing the usefulness of the page and the likelihood that those viewing it will actually click on the advertising presented there."

Yahoo's Version of AdSense called Yahoo! Publisher Network was launched (beta) in 2005. Microsoft is also working on their own Version of AdSense which is expected to be launched (beta) in 2006.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

Classic PPC Search Engine Marketing (Cost-Per-Click (CPC) advertising) is not Affiliate Marketing. It is an entirely different type of Internet Marketing and only has some technical details in common with old PPC/CPC Affiliate Marketing.

Ads are primarily displayed at the Search Engine Search Results Pages (SERPs) next to organic, free, Search Results. Contextual Advertising introduced with Google AdSense is also not Affiliate Marketing since no direct Partnership between the Advertiser who creates and pays for the Ads and the Publisher who displays the Ads on his Website.

This type of Marketing is generally referred to as Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and is often and wrongly mixed up and confused with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) which is about improving the ranking of a Site in the organic, free, SERPs at major Search Engines via technical means and deep understanding of the complicated ranking algorithms used by modern Search Engines.

Pay-Per-Call

This is a new compensation model. No official abbreviation exist yet. Advertiser pays publisher a flat $x.xx amount in commission for phone calls received from potential prospects as response to a specific publisher Ad. Recently developed call-tracking technology allows to create a bridge between online and offline Advertising. Pay-Per-Call Advertising is still new and in it's infancy.

Pay-Per-Call Advertising is neither Search Engine Marketing (SEM) nor Affiliate Marketing. It is expected to become the 4th major type of Internet Marketing next to Affiliate Marketing, Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimization within the next years.

The Affiliate Marketing shifted almost entirely to the Pay-Per-Lead (CPA or CPL) and Pay-Per-Sale Model (CPS) which is also known as Performance Marketing. The paid commission is usually a percentage of the referred sales or a flat dollar amount.

The Pay-Per-Lead (CPA or CPL) Model

Cost-Per-Action or Cost-Per-Acquisition (CPA), Cost-per-Lead (CPL). The Advertiser pays the Publisher a flat $x.xx amount in commission if a referred visitor performs a specific action on the Advertisers Site. It could be Actions like filling out a Form, Signing up for a Newsletter or Creating an Account.

The CPA Model is very popular with Online Services like Credit Card Providers, Insurance Services, DVD and Video Game Rental Services and Loans and Mortgages. Due to the usual high flat commission amount is the CPA very attractive for PPC Affiliates that do not have a permanent Website and an established User Base.

Before you consider the CPA Model for you problem, make sure to have mechanisms in place to validate the quality of referred leads. Your program will be vulnerable to become a victim of fraud, affiliates that generate tons of "fake" leads if you do not have anything in place to verify the quality of the produced leads.

The Pay-Per-Sale (CPS) Model

Cost-Per-Sale (CPS). Advertiser pays the publisher a percentage (%) of the Order Amount (Sale) that was created by a customer who was referred by the publisher.

This Model is used by most Online Merchants today.

Here are same basic tips for Advertisers that consider starting an Affiliate Program with CPS Compensation Model:

Do not pay commissions that you end up loosing money on an order. You will gain new customers because of the Affiliate Program, but you will also pay commissions for returning customers.

Shoppers on the internet are more savvy today. Comparison Shopping Sites, Coupon Sites, Cash-Back Shopping and Charity Sites, that make up a large percentage of successful affiliates, are often visited by Shoppers first. See the Affiliate Program also as a Customer Retention Tool.

CPA or CPS?

If your competitors have affiliate programs and you don't, chances are good, that you are loosing a considerable amount of business to them, because the lag of an affiliate program for your site.

If you want to use an Affiliate Program as an Online Merchant for the whole purpose of customer acquisition, consider the CPA Model and pay a flat commission for new customers referrer by affiliates.

Do the math to come up with a Flat Commission that makes it worthwhile for affiliates to promote you. Affiliates are not waiting for you, the next Merchant that has a Program is only one click away.

What you do and what commission you pay is up to you. You can also mix compensation models. The best thing to do is always to check first what your competitors are doing and use their compensation model as reference.

Pay-Per-Sale is by far the most common compensation model. 2/3 to 3/4 of all Affiliate Programs today are Pay-per-Sale Programs. The operating Site only pays "Commission" to their Affiliates for actual Results (a Sale, Sign-up etc.) and not just for promises (Clickthroughs, Banner Impressions).
